Fringe Festival

2nd Stage

July 18-28, 2022

While 2nd Stage takes a hiatus this season for some much-needed house improvements, they’re taking their shows into the community for a two-week Fringe Theatre Festival in Royal Oak at Five15 on Washington Ave and in Ferndale at Affirmations on Nine Mile Rd. True to the 2nd Stage tradition of staging the non-traditional, these specially curated shows range from local premieres to musical revues. You can purchase individual shows or buy a package. All shows are rated Mature for content.

Broadway Our Way: A Colorful Cabaret (A Musical Revue)

Venue: Five15
Show dates: July 18 & July 25 at 7PM
Conceived, created, and directed by Jay Kaplan

A loving tribute to the performers of color whose talents have lit up the Broadway musical stage for more than 100 years, as well as characters of color that have been featured in some of Broadway's most memorable musicals.  Running time: 90 minutes (Two 45-minute acts)

Goodnight Gracie, It’s a Stretch, Figments: Three Acts of Love

by Tara Makar
Venue: Five15
Show dates: July 19 & July 26 at 7PM

Directed by Erica Gunaca

These three lighthearted one-act plays are being premiered at the festival. Adult themes. Running time: 120 minutes

“It’s a Stretch”—Lauren and Sofia join a yoga class under the guise of gaining spiritual awareness, but much more is going on than impossible yoga poses.

“Figments”—An intimate look at a first date between two widowers who are grappling with the possibility of a romantic life outside their grief.

“Goodnight Gracie”—What happens when the Sandman and Tooth Fairy unexpectedly meet one night in little Grace Sullivan’s bedroom while making their nightly rounds.

The Vagina Monologues

by Eve Ensler
Venue: Affirmations
Show dates: July 20 & July 27 at 7PM

Directed by Leta Chrisman

Created in 1994, The Vagina Monologues examines womanhood and the female experience.  Built from hundreds of interviews with real women, this piece is at times funny, warm, heartbreaking, and ultimately hopeful that we as human beings can grow together by learning from each other's experiences.  Please note: This material contains adult content and graphic language. Running time: 90 minutes.

Two Class Acts: Squash & Ajax

By A. R. Gurney
Venue: Affirmations
Show dates: July 21 & July 28, both at 7PM

Directed by Matthew Rindfleisch

There's always that one student who tries to pull one over on their teachers. In these one-act plays, both students happen to be taking courses on Greek classics. It's funny how little things like identity and sexuality or love and politics have changed in 2000 years. Adult themes. Running time: 120 minutes
